Need a ride but don’t want to drive? Thanks to modern technology, you no longer have to feel limited to
driving yourself or relying on others for transportation. Whether you’re heading to a doctor’s
appointment, meeting a friend, or running errands, rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft make it easy to get
where you need to go—all from your smartphone.

At Medical Guardian, we want to empower you with the tools and technology that help you stay engaged in
your community and in control of your life. Learning how to use these services ensures you can maintain
your independence, all while knowing you have a safe and reliable way to get around. And for extra peace
of mind, we recommend taking a mobile medical alert device with you, so help is always within reach if
you need emergency assistance or want to connect with a loved one.

What Are Uber and Lyft?

Uber and Lyft are popular ridesharing services that connect people who need a ride with nearby drivers.
Think of them like a modern taxi service, but everything is handled through an app on your
smartphone.

Step 1: Download the App

Before you can use Uber or Lyft, you’ll need to download one (or both) of their apps on your smartphone.
Here’s how:

  • 1. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
  • 2. Search for Uber or Lyft and tap Download or Install(they’re both free!).
  • 3. Once installed, open the app.

Step 2: Set Up Your Account

When you first open Uber or Lyft, you’ll be asked to create an account:

  • Enter your phone number and follow the prompts.
  • Type in your email address and create a password.
  • Add your payment method (credit/debit card or PayPal).

If you prefer, you can also link the app to a family member’s account so they can request rides for
you.

Step 3: Request a Ride

Once your account is set up, it’s time to request a ride:

  • 1. Open the Uber or Lyft app on your smart phone.
  • 2. Tap Where to? (Uber) or Where Are You Going? (Lyft) at the top of your screen and type in your desired destination.
  • 3. Choose the ride type you want
    • Most people select the standard ride, called UberX or Lyft Standard.
    • If you are with a group larger than 4, you can order an XLwith extra seating.
    • If you’d like a more premium car/driver option, you can selectComfort or Black.
    • Some cities even have Petas an option, where you can bring your furry friends along for the ride!
  • 4. Check the estimated price and tapChoose (Uber) or Request Ride (Lyft)at the bottom of your screen.

A nearby driver will accept your request and start heading your way!

Step 4: Meet Your Driver

  • The app will show you the driver’sname, photo, car type, and license plate number.
  • Watch the map to see when they arrive at your location.
  • When the car pulls up, check that the license plate matches the one on your app before getting in.
  • Say hello and have your driver confirm your name.

Step 5: Enjoy the Ride & Pay Automatically

  • Sit back and relax—no cash needed! Your payment is handled through the payment method you entered into the app when you set up your account.
  • When you arrive, simply exit the car. The app will show you the total price, and you can leave a tip if you’d like.

Tips for a Safe Ride

  • Check the license plate before getting in to make sure it’s the right car.
  • Share your ridewith a family member or friend using the app’s “Share Trip” feature so they can keep track of your ride’s progress.
  • Sit in the back seatfor easier exits and extra space.
  • Only communicate through the app—never give out personal information to a driver.

Other Transportation Options to Consider

Uber and Lyft are great options, but they’re not the only ways to get around. Depending on where you live,
your state may offer public transportation services that accommodate seniors. Additionally,
if you’re heading to a medical appointment, check with your healthcare
provider—some insurance plans cover transportation services.

There are also senior-friendly rideshare alternatives like GoGoGrandparent and Arrive Rides that provide extra assistance, such as booking rides without needing a
smartphone or coordinating with caregivers.
