Those looking to purchase a medical alert device might wonder when the best time to do so is, but we can’t stress this idea enough: the best time to get protected is always today. The truth is you never know when you’ll need your medical alert device, but should an emergency occur, you’ll be grateful you have access to immediate help.

It seems that Ms. Edie of Sacramento, CA purchased a medical alert device from Medical Guardian just in time as it was only two months later that her device saved her life!

On September 2, 2015, 84-year-old Edie spoke with Life Safety Consultant George Marquez, who recommended a Mobile Guardian for Edie as she still lived a pretty active lifestyle. It was a little over a week later that Edie completed the activation process, but never did she think that she would use her device so soon after that.

Around 9:35 am on November 2, Edie fell backwards into her shower. Luckily, she was wearing her medical alert device and was able to push her wrist button. She was immediately connected to emergency operator Krista, who sent EMTs directly to her home. In five minutes, the EMT’s arrived at Edie’s home and transported her to the hospital.

As a result of her fall, Edie suffered a broken pelvis and went through three weeks of rehabilitation to help her regain her strength and mend her broken bone, but her injury could have been a lot worse had she not been protected with Medical Guardian.

Bathroom Safety Precautions

Out of the 60 percent of falls that occur within the home, a large majority occur in the bathroom. When considering its’ slippery environment and the need to navigate different surfaces, it’s not difficult to imagine why!

This brings us to a great reminder: always wear your medical alert device! All of Medical Guardian’s neck pendants and wrist buttons are completely waterproof, allowing you to wear them in the shower – where, like Edie, you may need it most.

Below are some other great bathroom safety tools that are both affordable and easy to install:

  • Shower Chairs or Tub Benches. These greatly reduce your risk of slipping in the shower or tub as they allow you to save energy and sit while bathing.
  • Handheld Showerheads. This tool allows you to easily bath without moving too much.
  • Non-Slip Mats. Non-slip mats will greatly reduce your risk of falling in the bathroom if you place them both inside and outside your shower or tub and near your toilet and sink.
  • Grab Bars. Instead of using unstable towel bars and toilet paper holders for balance, install grab bars by the toilet and next to and inside the shower or tub.
  • Raised Toilet Seats. If you have difficulty getting up from the toilet by yourself, a raised toilet seat will provide extra support and balance.
