A New Year of Living Life Without Limits

Right after ringing in the New Year, it’s not uncommon to see and hear a lot of content about setting New Year’s resolutions. Messages like, “New Year, New You,” or “How To Have The Happiest Year Ever,” make big promises and usually yield little results.

Here at Medical Guardian, we don’t think that you need to create a “new you” this year. Instead, we want to encourage you to make decisions that help you to improve your overall quality of life, maintain your senior independence as you age and generally be able to live your life without limits.

Find Ways To Make Small Changes

You don’t have to make sweeping changes to your life in order to achieve your health goals. In fact, a study out of the University of Scranton found that 92 percent of people who set big New Year’s goals for themselves never actually achieve them. The best way to actually follow through with New Year’s resolutions is to target one or two changes you’d like and become laser-focused on it throughout the year. If you are multitasking when it comes to working towards life-changing goals, you are destined to fail.

Instead, choose one or two achievable changes to focus on for 2018. Whether that change is finally quitting smoking, committing to healthier eating habits, or finally taking control over your finances, choose one or two that you know you can achieve and take small steps to reach your goals throughout the year. It’s also been shown that you will have greater success at achieving these changes if you write them down, helping them become a reality. No matter which change you aim to make this year, if maintaining your senior independence is important to you, you’ll find ways to rise to meet the challenge.

Don’t Let Chronic Illness Hold You Back

There are many reasons why senior independence begins to fail, although chronic illness is perhaps the most common. Once you begin to experience limited mobility, or other limitations to your independence, it can be easy to become a pessimist about the future. There is no need to despair, however. Medical alert systems are an excellent way to continue aging in place when you have a chronic illness, such as COPD or cardiovascular disease, without living with the fear of having a health emergency.

With Medical Guardian medical alert systems you can regain some of your freedom, since the monitoring centers are available to you round the clock, day or night. Just a simple push of a button can get you access to immediate medical attention, ensuring that even when you are alone, you’ll never really be alone. You can choose from a variety of medical alert systems to suit your lifestyle needs, allowing you to opt-in to protection both inside and outside of the house if needed.

Feel Safe Aging In Place

Since the majority of adults over the age of 65 would prefer to remain in their own homes as they age, otherwise known as aging in place, there are certain changes you might want to take into consideration to ensure your own safety. For example, this year might be the year that you install grab bars in the shower to help you remain safe from falls in a slippery bathroom. Or, you might want to clean the house to remove clutter and other hazards in order to prevent falls.

No matter which changes you choose to make in 2018, taking the necessary steps to allow yourself to continue aging in place can add longevity to your life and your independence.
